I enjoyed doing this, but instead of cutting the paper off, I soaked them in a bowl of water overnight and then let the kids peel them. Made the job so much easier on me!

I know its like a month late, but this is such a fantastic advent calender. I skipped the traditional chocolate ones that my family usually buys this year because I was trying to steer away from all the sweets. I wish I had seen this sooner. Boo on me for taking so long to visit. My December was KA-RAY-ZEE. HOpefully, January will be more calm.

I think it depends how big the shoots or eyes are and what state the potato is in. We went through few waters, and ended up throwing out one potato but that is because I was too slow in putting it in soil. What I am saying is that it is very normal, technically to grow potatoes you cover them with soil and add more soil the moment you see branches show up. I don’t think potatoes like as much water as beans.

I’ve been trying to grow a potato plant in a cup with water, its been 2 weeks and I have to keep changing the water every day because the potato seems to be breakingdown in the water its a soft on the bottom and it gets cloudy, gooey and bubbles form at the top of the water. Is this normal? Does some one what’s going on did i do something wrong?

Thanku so much 4 this as I have been searching 4 days for instructions. More ppl are worried about making a profit I guess so they upload no directions lol! Your directions are so easy! The hole punch is great I been printing & tracing,cutting with kitchen sheers which I guess is bad. Everything is still very sharp even if I sand it. It’s a mess! My 1st Monster Drink container 2 waste.:( Oh well Trial & error I guess. Also the sheers were leaving it ridgy.. Maybe I should get craft scissors or metal cutting draping scissors! The stars lined up would make very cute earrings..

I love this it’s so simple! I’m having some trouble getting the texture you have. I am trying this with a batik which has some body but it doesn’t have shape yours does, it just looks like a bunch of circles stacked. How do you make and keep the crunched shape? Do you crunch them before you put them together?

We LOVE nature activities (my son and I). We did pine cone bird feeders back in January and I’m surprised how much he liked it (he’s just 2-1/2). The squirrels loved them the most, but also the chickadees. I just did a nature post on my blog about all the critters that come to our yard; which is quite a blessing for a condo out in the suburbs. Looks like you have a great blog. We love posting to the Play Academy too when we get the chance!

All the world loves Strawberry Shortcake, or Lemon Meringue. She was actually my favorite. I also really liked Purple Pie Man. I think he just must have had a bad grape that made him so grumpy.

Love the window art. You and all the fantastic ideas. Like I always say, we’re gonna have to try this one out. Not sure how comfortable i feel giving the 4 year old a permanent marker though. Maybe I can just breath through it, and don’t blink

Brilliant idea using the cookie cutters! Besides from blogging and cooking, I also teach Kindergarten, so I totally appreciate that easy step! Usually I’m messing around with a knife, trying to make some sort of recognizable figure.

Diane and I used cut apples to stamp wrapping paper one year while she was in high school. I am thinking your potato stamps would work well too.

So cool! We’re going to try to sprout some potatoes over St. Patrick’s Day and I’m going to have to look back at your tutorial, it’s great. I remember harvesting potatoes from my grandfather’s garden as a child and it was like unearthing burried treasure.

I think that’s fantastic!

We are already thinking about spring veg gardens here in Houston. The weather this week has been warmer, High 77 today. Soon it’ll be like that everyday, so I’m off to clean out my Fall vegetable plot and get ready for tomatoes, peppers, and whatever else the kids want to plant.

I love planting with my kids, we might have to try this potato trick. Do you plant them after you’ve let them sit like this for 5 weeks?

We planted potatoes a couple of summers ago in old tires. Someone had told us about it, so we gave it a shot. I didn’t realize then, that there are seed potatoes. We just took a regular russet out of the basket we use for eating. We cut it in half and covered it in soil in the tires (which my husband had pre-drilled holes) We had 4 tires stacked ontop of each other. If you are limited on space, this could be a good option. It was also very easy, though not the most attractive. We got a small harvest, the kids were thrilled! I will do a little more research this go round. Come on spring! Good luck with your potatoes! So funny. I have the same trays, and as I read along, it didn’t occur to me that weren’t silicon either. I probably would have made the same mistake. We made some in muffin tins not too long ago–safe, but not as exciting as stars and puzzle pieces.

I used that very same puzzle mold from Ikea to make our crayons but we set the oven at a lower temp. Of course I can’t remember what temp. Ours are still totally useable. My tots loved that you can really put the pieces together!

I’ve done this and then put them in goody bags for my son’s birthday party. I used my regular muffin tin with cupcake liners which made them bumpy around the edges. The kids loved them! Great idea to use fun shapes.

Awesome idea. I never thought about using those molding trays. You can also melt the crayons on the stove in a pan and pour them into the molds. I haven’t tried it but I read it somewhere recently.

These are so cute! I have a million pieces of crayons in a jar that I have been holding onto since my daughter started actively using crayons. I always mean to make something with them but never do. I like the idea of placing them in the ice cube, I mean baking moulds, it’ll cut down on the amount of wax stuck to my pots. Even though there was a mishap, did you spray the moulds with anything first? I have silicone baking moulds and rarely do for regular muffins.

Thanks for the morning craft idea. My daughter and I just made one of these using little twigs I cut from the tree and the cranberries I got in my CSA last month that I never figure out what to do with it. She had fun since I let her go all out with this mess free craft. We used a large yogurt container as the outer and a beer bottle as the inner.

I have visions of making one a day for the next week so that we have enough for the outdoor steps

These are so beautiful! I’d make them today if I could get my hands on some greenery – everything is brown here and I have no holly bushes. I think I’ll be tearing apart an old wreath!

We used to do this too as kids- I think my parents still have some ornaments from salt dough that we made and still hang them on the christmastree.
I thought about making it this year too but so far did not get around to it.

If you live in an above freezing area, make them in the freezer. I want to use them indoors too – I figure I can put them in a pretty copper plant tray with some stones and greens. it should hold the water from smaller ones.

What an amazing idea. Just beautiful.

This are beautiful !! You don’t have to live in a cold place to do this .. pop them in the freezer .. just don’t leave them out for too long =0)
