Teaching your kids Manners

If you think of teaching your kids proper manners, DON’T.  Really there is no point.  Yes their sweet voices telling you please and thank you will melt your heart.  They will put a smile on your face and make you feel like you are doing a good job parenting.  Your family and acquaintances may praise you with their head nods and ooos and ahhhs.   They may even laugh when you ask your child to “say it properly” and he answers “properly”. It is all a hoax.  Teaching your kids manners not only will deminish your role as a parent it may even depleat your bank account.

Take this scenario for example.  You are in a public place and your child wants something and yells in Veruca Salt fashion:

“I want this, NOW !!!  Get it for me !!!”

To which, if you are like me, you react by saying: “You ungrateful little beep beep beep you are getting nothing, NOTHING you hear me.  Nothing until you get a job at 16, over the hills and walk for 20 miles to it each day in a snow storm”.

If your children are proper they will turn to you with a big smile on their face, charming you as much as they can and say:

“Mommy, could I please have some ice cream”

Yes

“Mommy, may I have this new doll, it’s biiiuuutiful, pleassseee”

Yes

“Mommy, I love you, could I pleeeaase have this new toy, dress, phone, giant TV screen, computer, car, crack”

Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes

The next thing you know their college tuition is invested in their stuffed animal collection and you still have no idea what happened.

P.S.  But don’t tell Veruca.  I am sure she would have done a lot better for herself with this information.
